| In volume 7 page 101 in History of the Church it says that Joseph Smith drank wine. Does anyone know if that wine was alcoholic or simply grape juice. My husband swears it is grape juice, but it never says that. DO you know? | |
I know that in the days of Joseph
Smith, the Word of Wisdom was not
a commandment, but was later made
a commandment by Brigham Young
many years after they arrived in
Utah. If Joseph Smith did drink
wine in the Carthage Jail as some
say he did, then we should
consider the context, for even
Jesus drank wine. They were
singing hymns in the jail at that
time. Maybe it was a sacrament,
and in that case, wine would have
been just fine. The Word of Wisdom was given in our day as a blessing from the Lord to teach us the good ways to eat, what is good for us, and some warnings against evil and conspiring men in the last days. The liquor industry contains these kind of people, who care more for profits rather than the consequences of the excesses in our society using their products. |

There is much symbolism in the Son
being on the right hand of God,
the goats on the left, the sheep
on the right, etc. This is
extended to our ordinances as
well, as even the sacrament should
be taken with the right hand.

| ???? I'm confused. I read some intro stuff at the LDS main page and it specifically said that Jesus and God the Father were 2 different beings. In your creation story there, Jesus is called Jehovah, god is Elohim(sp?) and there is Micael(sp?). jehovah and Michael go down to create the world at Elohim's request, and the three are all separete. Jehovah is a spirit child just like the rest of us who are there, but is first. That is what the intro said. Then an answer of yours gave Mosiah 15-16 and said that Jesus and the Father are one! Which is it??? | |
They are two different beings, but
one God. Both of these conditions
are true. They are one in
purpose, unity, and glory. Both
the Father and Jesus Christ are
glorified exalted celestial
beings. When one acts, they do
the same will, because they are
perfect to their mission, which is
to bring to pass the immportality
and eternal life of man (Moses
1:39).

If I call for one of those free BoMs, where can I get an 1830 one too? Will I be hassled during order or sommething? (i admit i've heard the stereotypes, but i'm still unsure)
Katie:
You can search for several sites
on the internet search engines,
and find things on the LaBrea tar
pits. The Book of Mormon plates were made of gold, but the Book of Mormon prophets had plates of brass which were handed down from the time they left Jerusalem to the end 100 years later. It was a biblical resource containing parts of what we now call the Old Testament (up to about 600 BC). The Kinderhook plates incident was a hoax / forgery. An 1830 Book of Mormon is not available at that number, but is quite a collectors item. You may have to pay a LOT of money for one of those! And you may be hassled depending on how you feel about those young missionaries, but I think you will be happy to talk with them if that is what you want. It's up to you. |

| Where did Joseph Smith get the idea that the Archangel Michael was Adam? Will Michael (Adam) return in the latter-days before the coming of Christ? | |
Joseph Smith, I believe, did not
get ideas, but was taught from on
high. He had much instruction
from many of the Lord's past
resurrected prophets. It seems
very reasonable that he had many
revelations and instruction that
was not placed in the scriptures.
Such is the case with prophets.
For example, we only have 1/3 of
the entire Book of Mormon now,
because some of those revelations
received by the Book of Mormon
prophets are too sacred to reveal
to a wicked world. It will come
later in the Millennial reign of
Christ.Michael, or Adam, will return before the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ at Adam-ondi-Ahman, and will turn over the keys of this world back to Christ, who gave them to Adam in the first place in the Garden of Eden. |

| Why did Christ have to suffer for our sins? What I'm asking is why does Heavenly Father require someone to suffer for sins? Couldn't he just forgive us when we repent? Another question: How is it that justice allows Christ, a completly innocent being, to suffer for something that he didn't do? If someone has to suffer for sin then how, with justice, can the suffering be taken away from the person who committed the sin? Please understand that I'm struggling right now, and that my questions aren't meant to rip on the atonement. I'm just in desperate need of answers. | |
The laws of Mercy and Justice are

| I have a friend who was baptized in this past June-July. She's an active member, but is still attempting to apply the new gospel principles to her life. She is currently focused on her prayers; trying to remember to say them and making sure she does so correctley. She had a question concerning prayers but didn't recieve a convincing answer. She wanted to know if Satan could hear her while she's praying, and, if so, if he could use her desires against her. | |
Yes he can hear what we speak, but
I have a little theory which I
would like to share. I believe that when we show forth faith in God through His Son Jesus Christ, that the Holy Ghost and angels are around us, and provide a shield which our adversary can not penetrate. They are like our armor of God which we have "put on." I believe that when our family has family prayer, and the Spirit of God is strong, that any evil spirits are obliged to wait far off in the distance! ...just my little theory, but most important of all, we can know that with faith on Jesus Christ we have nothing to fear from satan. Nothing at all, as long as we trust in Jesus Christ. |

| My non-mormon friends often ask why I fast. I never know what to tell them. Please give me a good explanation. If you could, please include the proper way to fast. | |
Scott:The Book of Mormon tells of an account where the Sons of Mosiah fasted and prayed much, and by so doing, became men of God, and they grew stronger and stronger in their humility. Humility is a Godly attribute that is necessary to get back to heaven. Fasting can help to do achieve this.
Alma 17:3 [the Sons of Mosiah] had
given themselves to much prayer,
and fasting; therefore they had
the spirit of prophecy, and the
spirit of revelation, and when
they taught, they taught with
power and authority of God.
Helaman 3:35 Nevertheless they did
fast and pray oft, and did wax
stronger and stronger in their
humility, and firmer and firmer in
the faith of Christ, unto the
filling their souls with joy and
consolation, yea, even to the
purifying and the sanctification
of their hearts, which
sanctification cometh because of
their yielding their hearts unto
God.
Alma 6:6 ...the children of God
were commanded that they should
gather themselves together oft,
and join in fasting and mighty
prayer in behalf of the welfare of
the souls of those who knew not
God.
The proper way to fast is with real faith in Jesus Christ, the purpose and power behind the fast. |

| I was wondering what the mormon stand is on the meaning of faith? What is you r definition of faith as a mormon and how would you back it up? Would there be any test that I could look at? A quick replay would be more than great because I am writing a paper and I am flustered. Thank you for your time and consideration | |
The Book of Mormon prophet King
Benjamin declared, "Salvation cometh to
none . . . except it be through
repentance and faith on the Lord
Jesus Christ" (Mosiah
3:12).Another Book of Mormon prophet Alma taught Faith is a "hope for things which are not seen, which are true" (Alma 32:21; see also Hebrews 11:1). The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that faith is a principle of power that motivates our day-to-day activities.
Would we study and learn if we did
not believe we could obtain wisdom
and knowledge? Would we work each
day if we did not hope that by
doing so we could accomplish
something? Would a farmer plant if
he did not expect to harvest? Each
day we act upon things we hope for
when we cannot see the end result.
This is faith. (See Hebrews 11:3.)
Many scriptural stories tell how
great things were accomplished
through faith.
By faith Noah built an ark and
saved his family from the flood
(see Hebrews 11:7). Moses parted
the waters of the Red Sea (see
Hebrews 11:29). Elijah called down
fire from heaven (see 1 Kings
18:1740). Nephi called for a
famine (see Helaman 11:35). He
also asked the Lord to end the
famine (see Helaman 11:917). Seas
have been calmed, visions opened,
and prayers answered, all through
the power of faith.
As we carefully study the
scriptures, we learn that faith is
a strong belief of truth within
our souls that motivates us to do
good. This causes us to ask: In
whom should we have faith?
If you would like to try a test, I would recommend reading the Book of Mormon in faith and earnest, and with a contrite and humble heart, not prejudiced, but to actually believe it _could_ be true, and let the Holy Ghost witness that to you. Trust in the Lord. Be believing as a little child, for that is what Christ taught us to do, and said that except we become as a little child we can in no wise inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. You try this test and see the result. |

| I am a convert to this religon and I don't understand the Articles of Faith that says I believe the bible as well as it is translated. If I can't have faith in the Bible which was written first how can I believe in the Bom completely? Did not Joseph Smith refer to the Bible when he sought answers on which church was the true church? | |
Marinda:We place our faith in God the Eternal Father, and in His Son Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. They are one God united in purpose and glory. Even if we did not have the privilege to have a Bible and a Book of Mormon, a D&C, and the words of living prophets, etc., we should still get on our knees and place our faith and trust in the Lord. He will visit us by the power of His Spirit. He will not leave us comfortless. You may know by this same power what is truth or error. It was Joseph Smith's calling as the prophet of the restoration to bring forth the Book of Mormon, as well as to later make some corrections to the biblical record as directed by the Spirit of Truth. You can have faith in the words of God as they give you peace and comfort, and as the Holy Ghost witnesses the truths in them to your soul. |

| Dear Answerman, I come to you with nothing but love. My question is in reference to Galatians 1:8-9. It clearly says that even if an angel from heaven, should preach another gospel let him be accursed. That seems to be the case with the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is clearly another gospel or else it would be in the same bindings of the Holy Bible. How is the Church of Latter Day Saints justified in breaking a clear commandment of the one and only God by adding another gospel contrary to the Bible. I will keep you all in my prayers. God Bless. | |
Andy:
I appreciate your faith and
prayers, but I hope you will
consider that to not read the Book
of Mormon, and to judge it as
contrary to the Bible is blind
faith at its best.I know that if you read the Book of Mormon and examine its contents with fasting and prayer, that the Lord will be with you and will reveal to you his will concerning it. You will be armed with confidence in the Lord as you put on the whole armor of God, and trust in Him alone to give you the answers and guide you to truth. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, as well as I know that the Bible is the word of God. It has come by the convincing whisperings of the Holy Ghost which brings peace and assurance and confidence. Those prophets in the Book of Mormon were very real, and the Lord wants us to know of the things that they had to teach, because it is especially applicable to us in our day. Read the Book of Mormon, and you will find out a message of how Jesus Christ is the God of this land, the land of America. You will find out about the importance of free agency and how we can stay out of captivity. You will read about real heros who exercised great faith in Christ, and did miracles that compare to those done in Mose's day. Miracles in Christ. |

There are always several ways to
interpret a scripture, if taken
alone, such as this one where one
might get the idea that the faith
was to be delivered only one time
to the saints. But when we
consider the whole book of
scriptures, we can get further
understanding. There are other
scriptures pertaining to the
restoration that must be
considered.
The Savior promised to restore his
Church in the latter days. He
said, "I will
proceed to do a marvellous work
among this people, even a
marvellous work and a wonder"
(Isaiah 29:14).
For many years people lived in
spiritual darkness. About 1700
years after Christ, people were
becoming more and more interested
in knowing the truth about God and
religion. Some of them could see
that the gospel Jesus taught was
no longer on the earth. Some
recognized that there was no
revelation and no true authority
and that the church that Christ
organized did not exist on the
earth. The time had arrived for
the Church of Jesus Christ to be
restored to the earth. See also Revelation 14:6; Daniel 2:4445; Isaiah 2:24; 2 Nephi 3:6 15 |

Sandra:The modern prophets have repeatedly taught us not to use face cards. If we place our faith in tarot cards, ouija boards, and fortune tellers, etc., we may get answers, but we open ourselves up to deception because those are not the channel of the Lord. The Lord's channel is the Holy Ghost to us personally, and the prophet to the Church and world globally. He works through the Priesthood. I think that when others (a non- believer for instance) try to examine our faith from their perspective, without having had the privilege of becoming converted first, they do not have the ability to properly represent things. I really hate the thought of it! Please help me.
Becky:One of the really neat things about our Heavenly Father is that He is able to love all of His children (trillions and trillions) unconditionally and without reservation. He does not have to deal with feelings of favoritism or jealousy, for those are feelings and reactions of the natural man, which He is not. "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."(1 Cor. 2:11 14.)
19 For the natural man is an enemy

| Just a comment actually. I was reading the question by Vern about someone who can't find a mate in this life. It reminded me of my own feelings before I got married. I felt like I would never find the right one. Sometimes people try too hard. About a week after I vowed to wait until the resurrection to find my eternal mate, I met my eternal mate. What I am saying is that sometimes by not looking we can sometimes find what we have been looking for all along. As long as you keep dating and staying social, there is a good chance that you won't have to wait until your dead. When I stopped worrying about it, things started to happen. | |
Steven:Thanks for your comments on your experience. I believe that there are many people who are worrying about things, and when people worry, well, that is the opposite of faith. To worry is to doubt that things will work out.

| Mr answerman: I would like to know two things. 1. where do resurrected people live, before judgement day? 2. where do you get your information from? | |
Chrys:
I would suggest a reading of the
Gospel Principles book on the
subject of
THE POSTMORTAL SPIRIT WORLD
for details on portions of this
subject. I have my thoughts on
the matter as well. When Jesus Christ visited the spirits in the Spirit World immediately after his crucifixion, and before his resurrection, he met with the righteous spirits (see D&C 137 for extensive details on this). He did not meet with the wicked. Father Adam was there, Abraham, Nephi, etc. including Joseph Smith the prophet of the Restoration. Immediately after Jesus Christ was resurrected only 3 days later, so were the righteous spirits who had lived from Adam on down to the meridian of time. What this means, is that those with whom the Savior met in the Spirit World were also resurrected just after the resurrection of Christ. Yet they were commissioned to take the gospel of repentance to those spirits in prison that had not yet the opportunity to receive it. What this means, is that there are resurrected beings in the World of Spirits as well, who oversee and administer the missionary work and any other work that is taking place there pertaining to the salvation of mankind. As you can see, this answer came from the writings of the prophets as well as the scriptures. A good resource when searching for specific information is a CDROM such as the LDS Collectors library reference which includes the scriptures. |

| In reading your answers on some questions I came across you discussing how the plan of Salvation came about. In my teachings i was taught that Lucifer had come to Heavenly Father and said that he would make all people righteous and they would have no choice to follow the ways of the Lord but he would keep all the glory to himself. Jesus Christ came and said he would allow people to have free agency, and if you followed Heavenly Fathers plan you would receive the glory. Something along that line. Even if this analogy is wrong i am thankful for Jesus Christ!. Hope you can clarify for me! | |
Roland:From the www.lds.org site Gospel Principles we can learn the following: A Savior and Leader Was Needed When the plan for our salvation was presented to us in the spirit world, we were so happy that we shouted for joy (see Job 38:7). We understood that we would have to leave our heavenly home for a time. We would not live in the presence of our heavenly parents. While we were away from them, all of us would sin and some of us would lose our way. Our Heavenly Father knew and loved each one of us. He knew we would need help, so he planned a way to help us. We needed a Savior to pay for our sins and teach us how to return to our Heavenly Father. Our Father said, "Whom shall I send?" (Abraham 3:27). Two of our brothers offered to help. Our oldest brother, Jesus Christ, who was then called Jehovah, said, "Here am I, send me" (Abraham 3:27). Jesus was willing to come to the earth, give his life for us, and take upon himself our sins. He, like our Heavenly Father, wanted us to choose whether we would obey Heavenly Father's commandments. He knew we must be free to choose in order to prove ourselves worthy of exaltation. Jesus said, "Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever" (Moses 4:2). Satan, who was called Lucifer, also came, saying, "Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor" (Moses 4:1). Satan wanted to force us all to do his will. Under his plan, we would not be allowed to choose. He would take away the freedom of choice that our Father had given us. Satan wanted to have all the honor for our salvation.
Who is our leader and Savior?

| In regards to Amy Luna's question about the Book of Abraham and the papyrii. I think it is important to note Joseph Smith's description of the papyrii and compare it to those that have been found. For one, he described them as being written in rubricks and written in red ink, etc. None of the "found" papyrii are written in red ink, nor do the match Joseph's description in any manner, so they are obviously not the ones he used for translating the Book of Abraham. I think it was also Joseph Fielding Smith who said that as a child he would visit his uncle (Joseph Smith), and the papyrii would be rolled out, scattered all over the floor. The few papyrii that have been found would not even come close to covering a floor. Obviously, the Book of Abraham papyrii are still "lost." | |

| I would like to comment on record 2081, concerning murder. We recently talked about this in my Book of Mormon class here at BYU, and I found the insight illuminating. The two worst sins are denying the Holy Ghost and murder. Denying the Holy Ghost is called the "unpardonable" sin, because it cannot be forgiven. No amount of suffering will ever pay for it. But murder is called the "unforgivable" sin. This means that Christ did not suffer the penalty for murder, and therfore, is unable to forgive it. However, those who do murder can be pardoned. They must pay for the sin themselves, in the spirit world. When the sin is atoned for, they will be exalted to a realm of glory, the Telestial Kingdom. Thus, when King David killed to cover up his sins, he lost his chance for exaltation, and is even now paying for his sins in the spirit world. | |
Emily, thanks for the note! I am
not sure I can agree with it
entirely in light of D&C 19 which
states that everyone, not just
those who are pardoned, will have
to suffer for their sins, even as
Christ suffered, if they do not
fully repent in this life. In the
case of murder, they must suffer
the penalty, no matter what. But
even in this sin, there are
varying degrees, because we know
of the Lamanites who became the
People of Ammon who buried their
weapons of war after feeling that
they had used them unrighteously,
in killing their brethren in
plunder, etc. which was a practice
and custom among that previously
corrupt people. If Alma, in the Book of Mormon had to suffer the pains of a damned soul for three days because of his serious sins, then we can see that in some serious sins, personal suffering is necessary to complete the repentance / forgiveness process, even in this life. D&C 19 makes it clear that suffering will take place, whether it be a small suffering and repentance in this life, or serious pain and suffering in the next if we reject Christ's atonement, or have sins that can not be forgiven here, like murder and denying the Holy Ghost. |

One might have asked Moses the
same question: Why do we need 10
more commandments? Isn't the law
that Adam and Abraham lived good
enough? Or the Jews could have asked Jesus Christ: Why do we need your new laws? Was not the Law of Moses good enough for us? Why more? And we can see through reading the scriptures, that God has continued to reveal His will to mankind through His prophets from time to time. He continues to do so now. He did so with the Nephite and Lamanite civilization as well (the Book of Mormon). It is good to have the records of what God spoke to His people from time to time, and to learn from those important lessons of the past, and apply them to our lives today! |

We believe that Jesus went to the

and before his resurrection. This
is what the New Testament record
says. However, if you would like

| I have been asked a question by a girl at school and I'm not quite sure how to answer this question....but I KNOW that I'm right....She uses the scripture in JAMES 2:10 to rationalize that if someone were to commit ANY sin....they have committed ALL sins....therefore..SHE SAYS...that all sins are the same in the sight of the LORD... I KNOW this is NOT correct...If people just think about it...why would a JUST GOD punish us equally for something that is OBVIOUSLY much more severe...I WOULD Really appreciate an IN-Depth look at this...as it would really help me explain my point....and what the church has to say about this verse....please reply as quickly as possible... Eric Jeide | |
If we examine the extremes, such
as stealing food for hunger,
verses rape or murder, it would be
unreasonable to think that our
Father in Heaven looks on the two
things equally. It isn't true.Do we really need a scripture to tell us that? Common sense tells us that. At any rate, even Jesus Christ placed some sins on a more serious level than others. For example, He said Matthew 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and [that] he were drowned in the depth of the sea. To those whom worked for Pilate, the Roman soldiers who crucified Him, He said Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. The question is, then, why did Jesus feel differently about these two things? Why was He much more concerned about offenses that would come to little children than He was for His own life? And is it more serious to purposely offend a little child than it is to carry out a wicked order from one's government? Jesus apparently felt this way, and we can learn from His words. To follow orders of one in authority over you, even if those orders are wicked, is not on the same level as purposefully harming a little child spiritually of one's own free will and choice. |

bribing federal
officials "to grease the wheels."
Young justified
catering to corruption in 1861 to

Is this statement true? If so, I
find it very

find it hard to believe that a

Answerman: Thanks for the great site as it had a large part in the learning process leading up to my baptism. Great job!
The statement, put forth by an
editor of Sunstone Magazine, and
enemy to the faith, is in question
as are many of the things that
they put forth. It should be
noted that Michael R. Otterson,
the church's director of media
relations, took strong exception
to Peck's statement, saying that
"to infer that there is something
inherent in our faith that
espouses anything other than the
highest ethical and moral
standards is irresponsible and
blatantly false." David: I too can not believe that a prophet of God would behave in such a manner. But I just don't believe it is true. Call me a fanatic, I believe that much of what we hear and read in the media is slanted, biased, and sometimes just untrue. We need to always follow the guidance of the Holy Ghost in what we believe, and never, ever, trust in man. |

Thank you for the wonderful service you provide!
Scott:
The scrolls recently discovered do
not match the specific description
of the same that Joseph Smith
provided in his day. In other
words, they are different scrolls,
despite what some people may
think. There were 11 mummies that had scrolls with them, and Joseph Smith only obtained four. It was the four that mattered, obviously, because the Lord put those into his hands, because Joseph Smith was His prophet. A chosen prophet. The scrolls that Joseph Smith had were lost, and presumed to be destroyed in a great Chicago fire where they once resided. All of this talk of them being resurrected now as the Book of Breathings is merely a falsehood put out by uninformed or ill- intending persons who have not learned that they do not match the specific descriptions that Joseph Smith wrote, nor do they believe in the power of God to communicate with His prophets. |

Adriana: I think I can help,
because I too have experienced
what you are talking about.
Spirituality is work. Plain and
simple. It takes effort, but just
like exercise is hard, and people
get sore and tire out, and most of
the time quit, there are a few
people who stick with the
program... and they get to a point
where they run or swim because
they love to. It makes them feel
good. They have high energy and
are able to feel better after they
exercise. It is quite the
opposite of a person who is just
starting an exercise program,
where it is a chore and a great
burden. So it can be with the scriptures, especially the weightier ones like Isaiah. Isaiah contains words specific to and helpful to the House of Israel, which we are. I would encourage you to ask the Lord for specific help, to strengthen your desire, until you can get to that point where the Holy Ghost makes you feel real good to read Isaiah, and you begin to understand the hidden truths contained in it. It is often meaningless just as words, but when the Holy Spirit gives understanding, it becomes much more exciting and rewarding. |

One other little question, does the God of the Mormons have a flesh and blood body as we do? I have read that but wanted to ask you.
No, God the Father does not have a
body of flesh and blood, but a
glorified body of flesh and bone
(see D&C 130). There is a
difference. He is immortal and
glorified so that even the sun
pales at His presence and glory.
This is not the same as you or
I.We are the children of Heavenly Parents. We are not at home here in mortality. We are spirit children of Heavenly Parentage and the righteous long for that homecoming to their Eternal Parents. | In looking at religions I find that most say what is said often here. Sincerly pray for the answer and you will receive the answer. Well I find many people of many different religions have done this and they believe their faith to be true. Now unless everyone is misled but one group, maybe they all are true and there is many different roads to God. Is this possible? Thank You.
Yes this is true. There are many
paths that lead back to God. It
just depends on which member of
the Godhead we are speaking of.
There is a path back to the
Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy
Ghost, another path back to Jesus
Christ and the Holy Ghost, and a
third path back to the Holy
Ghost. There is the straight and narrow path found in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which leads back to God the Father, or the Celestial Kingdom for those that are valiant in the testimony of Christ. There is also a path that leads to the Terrestrial Kingdom of God, which is ministered to by Jesus Christ, but not the Father, and this is also a Kingdom of Glory, an alternative to the Celestial Glory which differs like the moon (Terrestrial) compared to the sun (Celestial). Since Jesus Christ, or God, will minister there, this is also a path back to God. These are they who accepted Christ, but conditionally, not being obedient to his laws and ordinances, and they were not valiant in their testimony. Finally, there is the broad gate back to God, or the Telestial Kingdom, which is ministered to by the Holy Ghost, but not Jesus Christ or the Father. Those that go to this place are those that did not accept Jesus Christ. They will still have the presence of God via the Holy Ghostand ministering angels: D&C 76:88 ...the telestial receive [the Holy Ghost] of the administering of angels who are appointed to minister for them, or who are appointed to be ministering spirits for them; for they shall be heirs of salvation. Depending on how one feels about their religion, they may be on the path that they desire to be on, and have a measure of happiness. |

V2:228 "Elder Milo Hays was tried for not obeying the WORD OF WISDOM, and for covenant breaking. I realize that they also has a more serious offense of "breaking covenants" however, they were also excommunicated for not abiding the Word of Wisdom.
Jessica:The Word of Wisdom is a commandment now, but on those days it was not yet. But still, it was nothing to be ignored even as any revelation from the Lord is not to be trifled with. The Lord just does not like to command in all things. But for the leaders of His Church, He requires a higher level of obedience and example. This may be why it was mentioned in association with Elder Heath's breach of covenant. Breaking sacred covenants is an excommunicable offense, as it is a lie directly to God. |

| Does the church teach that Jesus was the last sacrifice and where can that be found? | |
Alma 34:10 For it is expedient
that there should be a great and
last sacrifice; yea, not a
sacrifice of man, neither of
beast, neither of any manner of
fowl; for it shall not be a human
sacrifice; but it must be an
infinite and eternal sacrifice.
11 Now there is not any man that can sacrifice his own blood which will atone for the sins of another. Now, if a man murdereth, behold will our law, which is just, take the life of his brother? I say unto you, Nay. 12 But the law requireth the life of him who hath murdered; therefore there can be nothing which is short of an infinite atonement which will suffice for the sins of the world. 13 Therefore, it is expedient that there should be a great and last sacrifice, and then shall there be, or it is expedient there should be, a stop to the shedding of blood; then shall the law of Moses be fulfilled; yea, it shall be all fulfilled, every jot and tittle, and none shall have passed away. 14 And behold, this is the whole meaning of the law, every whit pointing to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God, yea, infinite and eternal. |

| This was a question and your subsequent answer to a "Word of Wisdom" subject. I would like to know where this Brigham Young revision came from. It was my understanding of D&C 89:2 that is was 'to be sent by greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom...' If this is my understanding, Brigham Young contradicted God. | |
Brigham Young was a prophet of
God, and as such was impressed
upon by God to make the Word of
Wisdom a commandment. Line upon
line, precept upon precept, this
pattern and precedent was set in
the days of Moses, when he
received commandments of the Lord
that superceded that which was
previously received. For example,
to 10 commandments superceded that
which Moses originally brought
down from the mount. Many people make the mistake of thinking that God reveals something and that it will never change for us. Yet the scriptures are complete with many examples of how God makes changes through his prophets. That is why we have so many books in the Bible. God has revealed many things at different times through the prophets (Amos 3:7) The biggest change of all came when the Law of Moses was fulfilled by Jesus Christ, and a new church structure was established with Apostles. Change is a good thing, and it helps to provide opportunities for people to really prove their faith in God or in man. It requires people to really believe if a man is a prophet or not when change comes. |

Where can I find such information ? Except the instructions given by Joseph Smith, is it possible to know where all the temple ceremonies come from ? Is the text of the endowment available ? When does cursing in the Church happen ? Do you have any stories you could tell me about ? | I was looking throug your archives and I came across #2175. Some lady was asking you why you called yourselves "Latter Day Saints Christians". And you answered by saying "we are." By claiming to be Christians according to Brigham Young you "know nothing of God or the things of God.(Journal of Discourses 13:225)." According to Brigham Young it sounds like the word "Christian" should make you think of the devil himself. Claiming to be a Christian should be just as bad as worshiping Baal(Divine Authenticity of the BOM, No.1 (1850); Page 82). Please give me an answer about why you call yourselves Christians
I believe that in the days of
Brigham Young, he may have been
right. Context of the statement
matters. Where were all of the
Christian people in the United
States in the 1840's when the
Latter-day Saints were being cast
out of their homes and driven west
in the freezing winter snows?
Where were all of the Christians
when the Constitution was
violated, and even the President
of the United States would not
honor it, said "your cause is
just, but I can not help you."
Where, were the "Christians"
then? Why, many were leading the
charge of persecuting the Latter-
day Saints and killing them.
Maybe Brigham Young was not so far
off the mark in calling things as
they were. How would you feel to
be a Latter-day Saint in the
1840's? You may have died for
it.That was then, and I believe Brigham Young was accurate in his assessment of the situation then. That was 140 years ago. This is now. We worship Jesus Christ, and this term, Christian, has evolved in a much more tolerant society, to where even we, the Latter-day Saints can call ourselves Christians because we believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior of the World. It is wonderful to live in a more tolerant society where homes are not burned down, people killed, driven out of towns, etc. because of one's religion.

| An active, married LDS man procrastinates on going to the temple for his endowments & to be sealed. He then dies. Is he eligible for this sealing via proxy? If so, what is the urgency to do your own temple work in this life? If relatives can always "make-up" for procrastinations like this, why even worry about getting your temple work while alive? | |
If he can overcome his sinful
disobedient nature while in the
Spirit Prison, then that may be
possible. God would know. But the
Book of Mormon teaches that if we
procrastinate the day of our
repentance, there comes a night of
darkness wherein no labor can be
performed:
Alma 34:33 And now, as I said unto
you before, as ye have had so many
witnesses, therefore, I beseech of
you that ye do not procrastinate
the day of your repentance until
the end; for after this day of
life, which is given us to prepare
for eternity, behold, if we do not
improve our time while in this
life, then cometh the night of
darkness wherein there can be no
labor performed. In the Doctrine and Covenants section 138 we learn that the gospel of repentance is taken to those in the Spirit Prison who are under the bondage of sin (v.57), and that repentance is possible. We also learn in the D&C 76 that those who are not valiant in the testimony of Christ in this life, but afterwards received the testimony (such as one who would procrastinate a vital ordinance of Christ), will inherit the Terrestrial Kingdom. This would point to an urgency to be faithful while in this life. A true disciple of Christ would not procrastinate important ordinances. If one hopes to even get to the Celestial Kingdom, they must be valiant in the testimony of Christ, courageous, brave, diligent! Such a person would also be a regular temple participant, and fulfill the ordinances by being obedient to them, for they are the will of Christ who revealed them in the first place. |

| Except the instructions given by Joseph Smith, is it possible to know where all the temple ceremonies come from ? Is the text of the endowment available ? | |
The only way to know for sure is
through faith. Just like the
people in the days of Moses needed
to exercise faith to know if Moses
was steering them right, the
people today need to exercise
faith to know if Joseph Smith was
indeed a prophet of God, and
received instructions from on
high. There is no other way to
know except by faith.

| what does it take to become a Morman? do you have a certain creed that you go by? | |
The only creed that I know of is
to have faith in Christ, and be
obedient to all of His
commandments and teachings. To be
a true disciple. In ancient America, the prophet Alma was teaching hundreds of souls who wanted to follow God, and he said to them:
Mosiah 18:5 Now, there was in
Mormon a fountain of pure water,
and Alma resorted thither, there
being near the water a thicket of
small trees, where he did hide
himself in the daytime from the
searches of the king.

| Please tell me how John the baptist prayed for Joseph smith and his friend to recieve the aaronic priesthood when he never held it. the Levitical(or aaronic priesthood) involved work strictaly in the temple every day all day thats what they did, John didnt work in the temple he baptised people in the wilderness which was not a levitical duty and wore animal skins and ate locast which were unclean. how is this possible and there is no way he could have recieved it after death? what you believe is just not consistant with the bible why? I believe the Bible is the Infaluable and inccoruptable word of God. yeah, its been translated but it is very close to the dead sea scrolls and it has been around for thousands of years the book of mormon has only been around for a few hundred and has already had a few thousand changes we'll see how close it is to the original when it turns two thousand years old. | |
John's father, worked in the
temple, and held the Levitical
Priesthood. He passed it on to
his son, John. John had a very
special mission in life, and knew
Jesus growing up. John's mother
and Jesus' mother were very close,
and we even have the account of
the baby John leaping in the womb
of Elizabeth when Mary arrived,
also pregnant with the baby Jesus.
I would encourage you to read the Book of Mormon. Ignore all of the statements about the "numerous" changes that have been made to it. That is simply, not true. Modernizing the text by adding verse numbers, chapter headings, footnotes, reformatting, and a few clarifications and corrections to original printer's errors...puts things in their proper context. The Bible, on the other hand has numerous versions of translation, and not all say the same things. Which one is "infallible" in light of the many choices we have? Is the King James version that we use, the infallible one, or should we look to the NIV, or some other? The Book of Mormon, on the other hand, has one official version available, made accurate from the original manuscripts. |

| I have been told many times by Mormons to look at their fruits as Matthew 7:20 tells us to do. I have been told by many Mormons that the reason why I disagree with them is because I have "bad fruits". Forgive me if this sounds offensive, but these are the fruits that I am seeing from the Mormon church. Mormons profess a plurality of gods. They teach that the Book of Mormon is the everlasting gospel, and that the Bible is full of contradictions and cannot completely be trusted, Joseph Smith claims to have seen God. Mormons have practiced polygamy and believe they will practice it again in the hereafter. Mormons taught 148 years ago that blacks were cursed. The doctrine of "blood atonement," taught strongly by Brigham Young, no doubt was a major factor in the slaughtering of some 130 immigrants at the Mountain Meadows in September 1857. Utah, which is 77% Mormons have the same social ills that plague our nations and in some cases even higher. Is it because I don't agree with any of these statements that I have bad fruits? Or is it still that I don't understand what you believe and practice? Or these the fruits I should be longing for. | |
Jeremy:You have seen a few things that look bad to you. Things are not always as they appear. There are so many other good things that if viewed as a whole, would make things look good to you overall. The fruit of the works is what we are talking about here, not the doctrines or practices that you may not accept yet. I have to admit, if I lived in ancient days, and did not have faith in Christ, animal sacrifice would have been a repulsive thing to me. But when understood that it is the will of the Lord, it is a beautiful and spiritual thing. Jesus taught us that if any man will know the doctrine, he must do His will. We must try the faith first by doing it, and then we may know the doctrine. You are trying to know all of the doctrine first, before you try it. Why not do things the Lord's way, line upon line. Receive baptism. Receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, in faith and believe, with a child- like meekness and faith. And then you will discover these other things that the Lord has held from you up to now because of your unbelief. If it is wrong after really trying things according to the Lord's way, you will know it, and you may withdraw with a clear conscience. But to reject the opportunity to receive further light and knowledge from the Lord, by trying to understand all things before the Lord has given that gift to you, is to not give the seed good soil in which to grow. It is like the good seed was cast on stony ground, and can take no root. Are you fearful that these doctrines which you can't accept may take root in you? If you fear, you will never discover. I encourage you to have faith, and fear not what man will say, fear not the pride of the world, etc. Read the Book of Mormon with full purpose in heart, to know if it is true, not to know if it is false. If you approach things in a positive way, the Lord will be with you. |

| I have talke to mormons who have compared Joseph Smiths death to Jesus. That he died a martyr and he went as a "lamb to the slaughter". Volume seven of the History of the Church quotes John Taylor, an eyewitness to the act as saying "He [Joseph Smith],however, instantly arose, and with a frim, quick step, and a determined expression of countenance, approached the door, and pulling the six-shooter left by Brother Wheellock from his pocket, opened the door slightly [of the jail cell] and snapped the pistol six successive time; only three of the barrels, however, were discharged. I afterwards understood that two or three were wounded by these discharges, tow of whom, I am informed died (p. 101). Of course you know that John Taylor later on became a prophet. How can Mormons say he died as a lamb led to the slaughter? He seemed to fight all the way to his death. Even then, it is still possible for somebody to condition himself in believing a lie to the point where they will even die for it. People have done it in the past and they will do it in the future. | |
Many have died a martyr. No death compares to Jesus Christ in my book. Jesus Christ died for me, you, and everyone. Joseph Smith died for Christ, not me. It was between Joseph and his God, our God. Joseph Smith was a true follower of Jesus Christ, a disciple and Apostle, and for this reason he was murdered, and thus martyred. Jeremy, what I do not understand, is the attempt by some to downplay what Joseph Smith did by walking willingly back to Nauvoo into the hands of his murderous enemies, when an escape was assured! ...and then walking on in to Carthage with them, willingly! Like a lamb to the slaughter. He knew he would die. He said so. He died a true man, a true disciple of Christ, and has most assuredly gone on to the highest kingdoms of heaven to live with Him whom he faithfully served.
Praise to the man

| In your informed opinion, was there or was there not people in the Western Hemisphere in the time of the Jaredites and/or Nephites/Lamanites that were NOT from the voyages mentioned in the Book of Mormon. That is, is it possible that Asians had indeed travelled across a Siberian- Alaskan land bridge centuries before as science has always maintained through archeologic studies and genetic studies of Native Americans? | |
The Bering Strait Theory
The normal way of dealing with the Book of Mormon "scientifically" has been first to attribute to the Book of Mormon something it did not say, and then to refute the claim by scientific statements that have not been proven. A good example of this is the constant attempt to blast the Book of Mormon by assuming that it allows only one possible origin for the blood of the Indians (a perfectly false assumption), and then pointing out that the real origin is a migration via the Alaskan land-bridge or Bering Straits--a still unproven hypothesis. For the theory of settlement by the Alaska land bridge, which has been accepted by North American anthropologists to this day, even though their colleagues in Europe and South America may shake their heads in wonder at such naive and single- minded devotion to a one-shot explanation of everything, has not been proven. Yes, there has been testing, but few people realize what dismally meager results have rewarded the vast expenditure of time and cash that has gone into the project. "Thus far," wrote Carleton Beals, summing up the situation in 1961, "nothing has been discovered to indicate human presence on or near the Bering Straits prior to 5000 years ago." Collected Works of Hugh Nibley, Vol.7, Ch.8, p.215 So in answer to your question, I think that it is very _possible_ that there were other people who came to this land that were not of the Jaredite civilization. It is a very large continent, and we have an account of how Coriantumr was found by the Mulekites and the record of that found by the Nephites several hundred years after the Lehi group arrived on the land. Mulekites came over and were discovered hundreds of years later by the Nephites as well. I suppose there were many groups that the Lord may have brought over to the land by different means. |

He asked "did Jesus have wives?" That esoteric dogma cannot be found anywhere in the Bible. He has called the LDS church a "cult." My question is this...If you know the truth, how about calling him on air, and ask him some questions. You keep on saying that we must have faith as a child. That I do agree, but you can't be gullible! The BOM has utterly been disproven, and obvious you know that. Also, what is "reformed egyptian?" Do I also have to accept that on faith?
